"Get ready for liberal/progressive talk radio, coming to a commercial station
near you. After June 2, of course." That's how Thom Hartmann ends his
report
of a talk radio industry event put on by Talkers Magazine (http://www.talkers.com).
It's THE BOTTOM
LINE. Seems a bunch of broadcasters, even Clear
Channel, are
ready & waiting with left leaning talk stations, waiting for after the FCC
vote. Keep shrub co happy till the regs are loosened and then go for the growth
market. That's the story. Good news if its true, but the proposed rule changes
are not a good idea. Join me in making some noise about this. An action resource
list called Media Challenge, is in the Rhino's Blog archives at:

But first, a few items of interest.
The police swept through several houses where protesters were lodging... before
the protest.
Instead of a search warrant, they brought the building inspector.
St. Louis Police Raid Buildings, Pre-Emptively
Detain Protesters of the World Agricultural Forum
The St Louis Dispatch reports: "St. Louis police detained an undisclosed
number of people Friday in a sweep of at least three buildings said to be used
by protesters of the World Agricultural Forum... In at least some cases, officers
were accompanied by building inspectors who checked for occupancy permits and
building code compliance... Matt LeMieux, executive director of the American
Civil Liberties Union of Eastern Missouri, said his office received about two
dozen phone calls in two hours Friday about conference attendees being arrested...
He said. '... what they're doing is pre-emptively trying to arrest people. It's
a bad and unconstitutional policy.' He said he was told that in one instance,
at the home of some 'local, grass-roots activists' where some protesters were
lodging, police showed up with a building inspector and said they both must be
let in or the building would be condemned. LeMieux termed the threat a 'trick'
that enables police to search a home without a warrant."

What issue can The NRA & CodePink get together on?
Unlikely alliances forged in fight over media rules
The Federal Communications Commission's likely action to relax major media ownership
rules is forging some unexpected political alliances. For instance, for the first
time a group known as "CodePink, Women for Peace" finds itself on the
same side of a fight as the National Rifle Association. These ideologically disparate
groups share a common concern. If the FCC votes to ease ownership rules, several
organizations -- left and right -- fear they will lose access to the public airwaves.
A wave of media deals and consolidation is likely to follow the FCC's June 2
vote, as companies buy and swap newspapers, television and radio stations.

Bushfeld Propagandists Pick Stupid Name for their Iraq Newspaper
WashPost reports: "As part of its propaganda effort in Iraq, the reconstruction
office is establishing a newspaper called al Sabah, which is translated as 'the
dawn' ['U.S. to Take Its Message to Iraqi Airwaves,' news story, May 11]. In
fact, al sabah means 'the morning'; the word for 'dawn' is fajr. This is well
known even among Muslims who don't speak Arabic, because a chapter in the Koran
is called 'al Fajr,' and the first prayer of the day is the fajr, or dawn, prayer.
So morning, dawn -- what's the difference? Well, al Sabah also happens to be
the name of the Kuwaiti royal family, as every Iraqi probably knows. News reports
indicate that Iraqis already believe that Kuwaitis were behind the looting of
their museums. Now they may be likely to believe that this new newspaper is sponsored
by Kuwait."

Move Over, Right Wing Radio - the Liberals Are Coming by Thom Hartmann, CommonDreams.org, 5/19/03 NEW YORK - A political explosion happened this weekend in New York, and it may be the big one that gives Karl Rove nightmares. It could mean the end of George W. Bush's seemingly unending ability to tell overt lies to the American people and not get called on them by the American media. At a Saturday talk radio industry event put on by Talkers Magazine, (http://www.talkers.com/) Gabe Hobbs, Clear Channel Radio's (http://www.clearchannel.com/) vice president of News/Talk/Sports, announced that in the near future this corporate owner of over 1200 radio stations is considering programming some of their talk stations "in markets where there are already one or two stations doing conservative talk" with all-day back-to-back all-liberal talk show hosts. Using the analogy of how music radio stations wouldn't run different categories of music on a single programming day, Hobbs said talk radio was similarly "all about format." This, he said, is why liberal talkers haven't succeeded when sandwiched between conservatives - radio stations shouldn't mix formats but instead should market to specific listener niches. Understanding this, it's clear that only all-liberal/all-day programming can fill the demand for liberal talk radio, Hobbs' comments suggested. The timing of Clear Channel's bombshell is interesting. Why this particular week and month?....
