QUOTE OF THE WEEKEND "I dreamed I saw the bombers riding shotgun in the sky and they were turning into butterflies above our nation." - - Joni Mitchell (From the lyrics of her song, "Woodstock") http://www.jmdl.com/lyrics/Woodstock.cfm http://www.woodstock69.com/ THIS WEEKEND IN HISTORY: MAY 24th, 1968 - - Four protesters, including Philip Berrigan & Tom Lewis, jailed six years each for pouring blood on draft cards, Baltimore, Maryland. Meanwhile the blood senselessly pours in SE Asia. MAY 25th, 1776 - - The Continental Congress resolves "highly expedient to engage Indians in service of the United Colonies," & authorizes recruiting 2,000 paid auxiliaries. Program was a dismal failure, as virtually every tribe refused to fight for the colonists. MAY 26th, 1972 -- Anti-Ballistic Missile (SALT I) Treaty signed by U.S. & USSR. TV TIP OF THE WEEKEND Mosaic Special Report: Aftershock Iraq - America and the New Middle East An expanded edition of WorldLink TV's groundbreaking Middle East news program. Hosted by veteran Middle East correspondent, Sandy Tolan, this Mosaic Special examines the aftershocks rocking the Middle East in the wake of the US-Iraq war. What will be the repercussions from this seismic event? As the victor, how will the United States reshape the Middle East? Will Americans be greeted as liberators or conquerors? We examine this not through the opinions of the U.S. media or beltway pundits, but through the lens of 15 Middle Eastern television networks-from Iran to Abu Dhabi, Syria to Egypt. Aftershock Iraq shows scenes from the war never shown on any other U.S. network and provides context and analysis from the viewpoint of the 280 million people most affected by the war's aftershocks. Today's RHINO'S BOTTOM LINE is another piece by Podvin, but tongue in cheek, which attempts to give us an idea of how some of the media players would spin the story of shrub killing his Mrs. But 1st a collection of stories from this past week which mix the topics of politics, entertainment & media. John Doyle writes for the Toronto Globe and Mail: "The really interesting aspect of 24 this season has been the use of the 25th Amendment as a plot device. It became even more interesting when, last Wednesday, the 25th Amendment was also used as a key plot device on the season finale of The West Wing. The 25th Amendment, which allows the president to lose his power to function as president, but does not remove him from office, has rarely been used in reality and rarely talked about, but now it's everywhere on TV. There's something happening here, and what it is has become clear... For the same obscure amendment to be used twice in prime-time TV shows is more than an interesting coincidence... Now, both shows suggest that a sitting president can lose his power lickety-split." Dubya is incompetent, maniacal and has lied to the Country about there being Weapons of Mass Destruction in Iraq. We say it's time to dust off the 25th Amendment. 25th Amendment Saving Private Lynch: Take 2 Robert Scheer writes: "After a thorough investigation, the British Broadcasting Corp. has presented a shocking dissection of the 'heroic' rescue of Pvt. Jessica Lynch, as reported by the U.S. military and a breathless American press. 'Her story is one of the most stunning pieces of news management ever conceived,' the BBC concluded -- the polite British way of saying 'liar, liar, pants on fire.' Though the Bush administration's shamelessly trumped-up claims about Iraq's alleged ties to Al Qaeda and 9/11 and its weapons of mass destruction take the cake for deceitful propaganda -- grand strategic lies that allow the United States' seizure of Iraq's oil to appear to be an act of liberation -- the sad case of Lynch's exploitation at the hands of military spinners illustrates that the truth once again was a casualty of war. Lynch, who says she has no memory of the events in question, has suffered enough in the line of duty without being reduced to a propaganda pawn." http://www.latimes.com/la-oe-scheer20may20,0,4093805.column Mike Malloy -- The Liberal's Answer to Rush Limbaugh Except Mike Uses Facts, Not Lies Samuel G. Freedman writes for Salon.com: "For nearly 20 years, Mike Malloy has been making talk radio like this: caustic, abrasive, inventive, confrontational and resolutely left of center. It has won him admirers and awards, and it has cost him jobs. At a time when the very genre of talk radio is widely seen as synonymous with strident conservatism, his career both ratifies and belies that premise." http://www.salon.com/ent/feature/2003/05/13/malloy/index.html The Bush-Bin Laden Family Connection -- Michael Moore Will Tell the Story Michael Moore's next movie is "about the Bush family, their extensive connection with the Bin Laden family and the environment within the USA post Sept 11. He has footage of the Bush family dining with the Bin Laden family. It elaborates on the business relationship between the families that has existed for many years. It explores how a Saudi charter plane traveled the US immediately after Sept 11 and how the FBI were pissed that they couldn't interrogate its Bin Laden passengers as they were ferried to Paris. It looks at the way in which the government used the events of Sept 11 to push their own agendas." http://www.aint-it-cool.com/display.cgi?id=15243 Has-been Rocker Ted Nugent Gets Booted for Racial Slurs Has-been rocker and right-winged extremist Ted Nugent has been given the boot by the "Summer Celebrations" music festival in Muskegon, Michigan as a result of his recent racial slurs on a Denver radio station. In an interview with Nugent on "Lewis & Floorwax" last week, Nugent bandied about "the N word" after using a host of slurs against Asians. In a written statement, Nugent has blamed the resulting back lash on reports by "liberal hippies in the media." Nugent scratched for racial remarks (brief registration required to read article)

'Whacking Pickles' by David Podvin, Make Them Accountable, 11/24/02 If George W. Bush were to strangle his lovely wife Laura - God forbid - how would the incident be reported by the mainstream media? This would be the same mainstream media that is now earning record profits as a result of the Bush decision to deregulate the industry and transfer broadcasting licenses from public to private ownership free of charge. What would the highly trained professionals of America's major electronic and print outlets tell the people of this country if such an unfortunate event were to occur? It might go something like this: New York Times: During a time of war, excruciating decisions must be made. This selfless act by our commander-in-chief will cause terrorists to think twice before attacking a country that apparently is being run by a deranged homicidal maniac. Americans should feel safer already. Therefore, only the most partisan malcontents amongst us will refuse to say, "Thank you, Mr. President, for sacrificing so much to protect our blessed land." Washington Post: The knee jerk reaction on the part of Mr. Bush's more ideological foes will be to call for an investigation. After supporting eight years of investigations over Whitewater, Filegate, Travelgate, etc., we at the Post are humble enough to admit the error of our ways. We have belatedly come to realize that investigations are evil, as is investigative reporting. Pessimists obsess about war, recession, corruption, and a rotting corpse in the Rose Garden - they see America's glass as being half empty. Our staff notices that government contracts have once again pushed the stock of WPO (Washington Post Company / New York Stock Exchange) to new all time highs, and we see America's glass as being half full. Look at it this way - Ann Coulter is going to be a real bitchin' First Lady... SEE THE REST AT: http://www.smirkingchimp.com/article.php?sid=9146 "RHINO'S BLOG" is the responsibility of Gary Rhine.
