QUOTE OF THE DAY
"Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past."
- - George Orwell

MAY 20th IN HISTORY:
1776 - -
Mohawks, under Joseph Brandt, defeat Americans at the Battle of the Cedars.
1969 - - US troops make their 11th assault in 10 days on "Hamburger Hill," finally capturing it in one of the Vietnam War's bloodiest battles. The mountain proved of little strategic value, & was abandoned 8 days later.

RHINO HERE:
Today at 10 AM Pacific Time, 1 PM Eastern, I will be a guest on the one hour talk radio show, Native America Calling discussing the proposed FCC rule changes. You can tune in on the web by going to:

and pressing "Listen to NAC Live"

There's a right wing move afoot to boycott actor Danny Glover, pressuring MCI to drop him as spokesman for their ads. Long time activist for freedom in South Africa and later, against shrub's war, Glover made statements recently that pissed off some right wingers enough for them to prove him right. Say what you think & we'll shut you up by your pocket book.

Danny Glover Under Fire For His Anti-War Position
Oakland Tribune , 5/19/03
...Glover said this chill comes from right-wing factions that he denounced as self-appointed thought police. "The whole idea is to crush any kind of dissent," Glover said in an interview with the Associated Press. "Something is happening now that is very dark and very sinister in this country, and for us to not admit it is happening is, in some ways, for us to be blind."...

At a an annual Ohio Democratic Party dinner, the head of the Dem National Committee spoke out against shrub's contribution to what Glover called the "dark and very sinister " atmosphere in America. Howard Dean & Dennis Kucinich also spoke here.

DNC Chair Terry McAuliffe Accuses Bush of 'New McCarthyism'
Via Democrats.com
"National Democratic chairman Terry McAuliffe accused President [sic] Bush on Saturday of unleashing a 'new McCarthyism' by vilifying people who oppose his policies. McAuliffe, keynote speaker at the annual Ohio Democratic Party dinner, also defended that state's Republican senator, George Voinovich, who wavered in his support for the resident's tax-cut package... After Voinovich criticized the plan, a pro-tax cut group ran television ads criticizing his position, and Bush visited Ohio to promote the tax cuts, a trip that many interpreted as an attempt to pressure the senator. Bush administration spokesmen said nothing about the ads, which characterized 'so-called allies' in Congress as 'Franco-Republicans'... 'George Bush has unleashed a new McCarthyism that, under the cloak of a time of crisis and peril, has vilified and questioned the patriotism of those who have policy and political differences with him and his administration.'"

Meanwhile, the movement to pass city & county resolutions expressing affirmation of the Bill of Rights & registering opposition to the Patriot Act has passed the 100 mark.

Subscriber Buys FTW Full Page Ad in The Washington Post
Leaked Copy May Have Forced Resignation of Army Secretary

May 16, 2003, 0500 PDT (FTW) - From The Wilderness today ran a full-page ad in the front section of The Washington Post intended to educate the American people, support heroic leaders and promote a number of independent media outlets which have made important contributions since 9/11. The ad was the direct result of a donation from a subscriber who had recently viewed FTW Publisher Mike Ruppert's video "The Truth and Lies of 9-11". The ad that ran today was actually a second version, the text of which had to be changed after the first version apparently caused some nervousness in Washington.

It's an interesting story. The text of the first ad, which reached the Post on April 23rd, contained two sections of well-supported text that were sharply critical of Army Secretary Thomas White. White was suddenly fired by Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld three days after the ad reached the Post. FTW has not been able to confirm that the ad was leaked but publisher Michael Ruppert strongly suspects it.

"It started when we got a call from a retired business executive who was so incensed by what he had seen in the 9/11 tape that he decided he wanted to do something with his own good fortune to make a difference. He specifically said that he wanted to buy us a full-page in the Post and that we could write anything we wanted," said Ruppert. "His only condition was that he remain anonymous. FTW never handled any of the fee - in excess of $20,000 -- to purchase the space and not once did our subscriber try to influence its content. I wrote the ad and three wonderful human beings contributed to it."

The three contributors who wrote special statements for the ad were former Assistant Secretary of Housing and past managing Director of Dillon Read, Catherine Austin Fitts, University of Illinois law professor Francis Boyle, and former Democratic Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney of Georgia...

THE STORY OF HOW THE AD CAME ABOUT IS AT:
