" - - Mark Morford, SFGate.com, September 8, 2004 THE HISTORY: September 11th, 1973 -- The C.I.A. facilitates the overthrow of the democratically elected government of Chile, ending nearly 150 years of democratic rule. The socialist government of Salvador Allende falls to the U.S.-supported military coup led by General Augusto Pinochet [au-GOOS-toh PEE-no-shay]. Immediately, hundreds of people are killed or "disappeared". In coming years, thousands are "missing". 16 years of repressive military terror follow. September 11th, 2001 -- Hijacked airliners crash into The World Trade Center in NYC & The Pentagon in WDC, major symbols of American global corporate capitalism, military & politics. The towers contain 1/3 of Wall Street financial offices & employ 50,000 workers. The Pentagon controls the largest military in the world. It's budget is larger than the budgets of the next 25 countries combined. Approximately 3000 people of all races & religious denominations die. America still awaits an honest investigation to determine why fighter jets were never scrambled to stop them, & how the "intelligence community" who were supposedly so behind the 8 ball as to allow this to happen, were also able to identify the alleged hijackers & know so much about them in such a short amount of time.  Many unanswered questions. September 12th, 1977 -- In South Africa, Steven Biko died under police custody. He headed the Black Consciousness Movement and was the country's best known political dissident. He was detained and held in Port Elizabeth and later driven naked in a truck 700 miles to Pretoria where he died in a prison cell. In 1997 the 5 police officers involved in his detention filed for amnesty. They were retired Col. Harold Snyman, retired Lt. Col. Gideon Nieuwoudt, Ruben Marx, Johan Beneke, and then Capt. Daantjie Siebert. In 1999 former Detective Sgt. Gideon Nieuwoudt was denied amnesty because he denied any crime. This killing was the breaking point and led to international protests and a UN imposed arms embargo. September 12th, 1997 -- In Mexico a crowd of tens of thousands rallied in the central square of Mexico City in support of the Zapatista movement. Transparent appeal to female voters who blame themselves after being sexually assaulted by their doctors (an archetypal GOP demographic). 8) Departed CIA director George Tenet is to blame for any inaccuracy in the speech. 9) Tactical flub to divert attention from covering-up Saudi financing of 9-11, allegations of his cocaine use at Camp David, photo of him with service medals he was never awarded, etc. 10) Sending-up a trial balloon for "no gynecologist left behind" legislation. 11) He's an idiot! BEST ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE: Senator John McCain. Four short years ago he was brutally denounced by George W. Bush. Now he's the one doing the denouncing. From President hopeful John Kerry, to paying homage to that "disingenuous" documentary filmmaker, McCain takes no prisoners. MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENT: The Bush Twins. Their attempts to appeal to a younger demographic through the use of self-deprecating humor, left many a delegate cringing. The "It" girls of the GOP may wish to consider the following: not everything is funny. Lose the speech writer-keep the fashion consultant. Honorable Mention: Delegates trying to get their groove on in Madison Square Garden with spastic gyrations and dated dance movements that make "The Macarena" seem almost palatable again. MOST CLASSLESS ACT: Purple Heart Band Aid wearing Republican delegates mocking John Kerry's Vietnam War wounds. Has the face of "compassionate conservatism" once again reared its ugly head? MOST CONSPICUOUSLY ABSENT FROM THE CONVENTION: Donald Rumsfeld and Colin Powell. MOST CONSPICUOUSLY ABSENT FROM PRESIDENT BUSH'S ADDRESS: Osama Bin Laden. Honorable Mention: WMD'S. BEST ART IMITATING LIFE IMITATING ART MOMENT: Arnold Schwarzenegger. Perhaps Ahnould should terminate the stale Saturday Night Live schtick that continually reminds us of the Governor's former profession as an action star not so long ago. Fortunately for him, Americans are short on memory and long on celebrity. BEST UNEXPECTED BOOST FOR MOOD STABILIZING PHARMACEUTICALS: Zell Miller's maniacal convention rant not to be outdone by his maniacal post convention rant when he challenged MSNBC'S Chris Mathews to a duel.
