THE QUOTE: "I think that this particular election is, at the core, a debate about the soul of the nation. I think we can move toward greater economic justice for all of our citizens, or we cannot. I think we can move toward a sane, responsible foreign policy, or we cannot. For me, these are issues that go right to the heart of the spiritual life of the nation. That is something I have written about. It cannot be abandoned and is worth fighting and fighting and fighting for. - - Bruce Springsteen (From the Weekend Bottom Line) THE HISTORY: September 25th, 1957 With Arkansas State troopers preventing the integration of high schools, President Ike Eisenhower orders the National Guard to escort 9 black children into Little Rock Central High School. White segregationists & the state militia are kept at bay by over 1000 paratroopers. The army remains for the entire school term. September 26th, 1924 The Declaration of the Rights of the Child was endorsed by the League of Nations. It was followed in 1948 by the U.N. General Assembly's adoption of a 2nd Declaration of the Rights of the Child, a brief, seven-point statement that built on the 1924 Declaration: "By the present Declaration of the Rights of the Child…men and women of all nations, recognizing that Mankind owes to the child the best that it has to give, declare and accept it as their duty to meet this obligation in all respects…." The 1948 Declaration was followed almost immediately by a decision to draft a still more detailed Declaration, resulting just over a decade later in a third Declaration of the Rights of the Child, adopted by the General Assembly in 1959. Strong oratory, beautiful pageantry, good feelings & an amazing new structure on the mall with great potential to educate Americans on history from the Native perspective. Here's a couple addresses given for the occasion by Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell; one at the museum and one on the Senate floor. Both were presented with the Senator in full Indian regalia. Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell on the NMAI Indian Country Today, September 24, 2004 by: Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell / Senior U.S. Senator for Colorado and Northern Cheyenne Chief / U.S. Senate / Northern Cheyenne / United States Government / Northern Cheyenne Tribe (September 21, 2004 was an epic day in the living history of Indian country. Adding his voice during the powerful opening ceremonies of the National Museum of the American Indian was Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell. Presented here is the speech he delivered before thousands gathered on the National Mall, followed by an excerpt from the statement he gave on the Senate floor while dressed in his full traditional clothing as a Cheyenne Chief. Not only did Sen. Campbell reflect on history that remarkable day, he also made some of his own.) "We've Been Misled" Springsteen talks about his conscience, and the nature of an artist and his audience By Jann S. Wenner, Rolling Stone9/22/04 Do you see these Vote for Change concerts reaching undecided voters, or are they more to rally the energy of people who have made up their minds? I always felt that the musician's job, as I experienced it growing up, was to provide an alternative source of information, a spiritual and social rallying place, somewhere you went to have a communal experience. I don't know if someone is going to run to the front of the stage and shout, "I'm saved" or "I'm switching," but I'm going to try. I will be calling anyone in a bow tie to come to the front of the stage, and I'll see what I can do. In a practical sense, what are you accomplishing? First of all, we have a large group of musicians -- Dave Matthews, the Dixie Chicks, Pearl Jam, R.E.M., John Fogerty, James Taylor and many others -- who are coming together as a rallying point for change. I think the concerts are going to be an energizing experience for all who come. Of course, I've met a few people who, in a very friendly way, said they are not coming. Basically, the concerts are raising money specifically for America Coming Together to do very practical things: voter education, to go out and mobilize voters, to go door-to-door, to assist voters getting to the polls. They're the real foot soldiers who are going to get out the progressive vote. That's probably the concerts' most important result. Why did you stay away from being actively involved in partisan politics for so long? I didn't grow up in a very political household. The only politics I heard was from my mother...
