So many islands, so little time Living in Indonesia and learning to Weblog via Radio (along with many other very random thoughts and stories).
Radio CommentsWell, I tried out the new Radio feature that adds comments and I think I'll stay with YACCS for now. I like that it shows you the number of comments that have been left for recent posts and that you can subscribe to a RSS feed of the comments on your site. Red DaysEvery Indonesian calendar has black days and red days. Literally the numbers for the days are black or red. Black days are normal work days. Red days are holidays. Today is a red day, but it's black on the calendar. Why? Islam's calendar is based on the lunar calendar and the holy days can't be precisely predicted until they are practically "on top of you". So, about a week ago the Muslim leaders got together and determined Idul Adha was on 2/22, not 2/23. And and entire nation adjusted its schedule. Can you imagine any western country doing this? It really is amazing! Idul AdhaToday is a Holy Day (holiday) in Indonesia. 85% of Indonesia's 210 million are Muslim. This makes it the World's largest Muslim country, a fact few westerns (especially American's) knew until 9-11. Anyway, This morning the s, Karen and I watched as about 8 goats were slaughtered in remembrance of Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son (Ishmael or Isaac, depends on who you ask ;-). Very y and gross for those of us not raised on a ranch. We gave a goat to the community for this event and after it was slaughtered they gave me the left leg to take home. (They offered other more "delectable parts, but I demurred.) Not being a great lover of goat meat, we gave the leg to one of our needy friends. The meat from the sacrifices are divided up and distributed to various needy people in the community.
