I opted to not buy the Tivo lifetime subscription, because I thought
that in such a rapidly evolving product category the base Tivo
functionality would soon enough be embedded for free everywhere
(set-tops, DVD players, PC's etc.) It seemed like that part of the
business model was going to have a pretty short half-life.
But reading the link above, I get the sense that most of the rest of
Tivo's value proposition had been reproduced already. Once the Japanese
electronics consortia gets their Linux distro's in production and
mass-produced, I think Tivo's pricing and functionality are going to
seem, well, pretty uncompelling.
