Using identity to fight spam... without PKI
http://taint.org/2003/10/20/014800a.html
This is a big idea, with input from an eminently pragmatic programmer
who knows something about distributed trust metrics, Bram Cohen. Some
type of web of trust is a prerequisite to implementing Paul Graham's
filters that fight back -- identifying trusted sites that don't deserve
to be bombarded by spam blow-back.
I really like Paul's idea, and hope that the flaws can be addressed.
It's the only solution I've read about that could make a difference even
if it wasn't implemented by everyone, and (the big 'and') changes the
economics of spam. I have a feeling that any solution that ignores
this just puts the problem off until sometime in the future.
