Wow. From the Paris blog: "The investigation in to the Joola disaster shows that the the boat that sunk off the coast of Senegal last year killed more people than the Titanic." [Le Monde]  ... Some 1,863 lost their lives, on board a boat licensed to carry 550 people. But in the West, we barely registered this non-Western catastrophe as such. Most likely, we don't even remember the name Joola -- or it only very vaguely rings a bell. In contrast, the Western world, especially the US, is rivetted by seven deaths on the Columbia. This is in no way to diminish those brave deaths, but rather, to wonder about our sense of proportion and self-focus. Those off Senegal also had children and treasured friends and family and partners, hopes and fears, special lives.
