> activeRenderer 1.2 Released

I've released the latest version of activeRenderer tonight.

Version 1.2 corrects a couple of minor bugs in the activeBookmarks feature (as reported by Gilles and Donovan), adds an optional 'uniqId' parameter to activeRenderer, to enable Mikel to call the rendering code several times within the same page in myRadio.

However, the main feature of version 1.2 is browser based OPML transclusion, as demonstrated in the Endless Web Page: any OPML outline linked to the currently rendered outline is *inserted* within the page when you click on the link, the same way it's done in Radio UserLand's outliner.

A while back, when first releasing Radio's Instant Outliner, Dave explained he didn't like the term transclusion, favoring inclusion instead.

I think transclusion gives a better sense of reaching out across the Web to bring some related information within the current context.

Ted Nelson, who came up with the idea in the first place (bless him), had a more ambitious vision, at a time when the Web wasn't even conceived. He sees transclusion as a bi-directional process.

In my opinion, browser based, OPML transclusion is a step in that direction. Web browsers are here to stay. Transclusion will move forward, supporting other publishing formats, and providing ways to achieve creative, visible and accountable re-use of original documents.

As usual, current activeRenderer users can wait until they restart Radio to download the latest code if they have auto-update checked in their prefs. Otherwise, they can click the update link under activeRenderer in their desktop home page status center. This section also displays activeRenderer's installed version.

New users are welcome to download the full version from activeRenderer's site.

> Jimmy Carter Wins Nobel Peace Prize

The Associated Press: Former President Jimmy Carter won the Nobel Peace Prize today for finding peaceful solutions to international conflicts, and for advancing democracy and human rights. [in New York Times: International]

How ironical: a great American is publicly rewarded at last for his never ending efforts to promote peaceful coexistence between people and nations, while at the same time, another American is leading the country on the war path.

> Congress Authorizes Bush to Use Force Against Iraq, Creating a Broad Mandate

Alison Mitchell and Carl Hulse: The Senate, joining with the House, voted early this morning to authorize President Bush to use force against Iraq. [in New York Times: International]

As much as I would like the Supreme Court to recount the votes, there's no ambiguity this time: G. W. Shrub has won this one.

According to Newsweek, U.S. Army's Central Command is currently relocating from Tampa, Fla. to Udeid Air Base, Qatar.

We will have started a war of aggregation by this time next month :-(

It is not only morally wrong: believing that a so called 'decisive', or 'swift' military action in Iraq will solve our security issues with the Middle East is an an exercise in wishful thinking and self delusion.
