The Rorschach Test of the Day - Did you know that the winning numbers for the New York Lotto yesterday were 9-1-1. Well that's what they said at the gas station this morning so it must be true. Anyway, I immediately had one thought and then another about this, and I realized that telling people this factoid is a great Rorschach Test. So if you haven't heard about this yet, stop and think for a minute about what this means. Then read below.
Did you think: "wow Fate is sending a message!" Or did you think: "Well, it's nice that this time at least they rigged the lottery to honor the occassion." I thought #1 and then I considered that #2 was more likely. What did you think?

Settlements filed under seal - the press calls these "secret settlements" and lawyers call them...well, who cares what they call them? The point is that there is a big issue about this sort of thing. If a manufacturer makes a dangerous product and settles the case in a way that makes it hard for the next injured party to prove their case...well, that's not a good thing for plaintiffs. Depending on the circumstances of the settlement it may not be good for society. Apparently federal judges in Florida are considering if this practice should continue. South Carolina's ten district judges amended their local rules to prohibit such settlements. Here's the article if you want to read more.
