I was doing some research and stumbled upon a very old snippet of code, which I think makes for an excellent geek "heat check." If you know what language this is written in and if you can describe just what the code is doing, let me know. (Here's a hint: it involves a famous philosopher whose name rhymes with wine.) Look for an answer tomorrow. Good luck!

Stretch your wit and imagination with our newest addition, the Network Computing Top 11 List. Unlike Letterman's so so Top 10 list, our list goes, well, to 11. Up first is Microsoft's security plan. So send us your idea for the top rejected slogans for Microsoft's Palladium initiative. We'll publish the most impressive submissions online and in print.

  • In the meantime, my response to this list would be, "Who else are you going to trust, Larry Ellison?"
