Mike Daisey points to comments by a writer who just finished a book tour.
Near the end of piece, the author, Steve Almond, points out that independent booksellers are more likely to do things that promote a community around literature. One owner sends lots of emails to his clients, another adjourns book readings to the bar down the street and picks up the tab for the first round.
We find the same community building at our local San Jose Repertory Theater. After matinee performances, the audience is invited to hang around for a question and answer session with the cast. Aside from interesting conversations with the actors, it's a great way to get to know the artistic director, Timothy Near, and other permanent staff, all of which tends to cement the connection with the theater.
