In a documentary I watched recently it said that the original inhabitants of the Everglades in Florida used to believe that the soul of a person was in three places: his eyes, his shadow and his reflection in the water. The last one had particular significance and was hence used in ceremonies. A person would step into water and then put his/her hands in and be able to get behind the soul and then scoop it up and pour it on himself. What a nice ritual to perform before swimming! Incidentally, are the eyes are considered as a place where the soul lurks because it is the only place on the human body that is capable of reflection? Other than the brain, of course :-)
