Google Zeitgeist: a voyeuristic view of what people want.
What lessons have we learnt from the SARS epidemic? I would say the following:
- There are surprises out there that can spring on us when we least expect them and conquering all diseases is just a pipe-dream. It behooves us to be humble.
- Keeping things secret will not make them go away. The Chinese government should have been more forthcoming with information last year.
- Living in close proximity with animals is not a good idea in the modern world. Diseases do jump acroos the species divide and in an urban setting can prove to be dangerous.
- Such problems transcend income levels and geographical distances. We need to do something about the poorer countries and the poor in our own country. We cannot retreat into our suburban homes and ignore the plight of those living in squalor. If they have problems, so do we - sooner or later.
