Three days ago the ZDF news correspondent, Ulrich Tilgner, in Baghdad reported having seen pictures of burning American tanks but there was no confirmation from the American channels to such an incident. I expected to hear something yesterday; even today there is nothing to that effect. However, a Russian site is also claiming that several American tanks were destroyed. I would not have believed that I would have to resort to a Russian news source. Incidentally, Venik, the person responsible for that site, also describes how the frequency hopping communication system of the Americans were cracked. The report does not make it clear if the encryption, which provides an additional layer of security, has been broken as well. I doubt it.
Of course war not only consists of what transpires on the battlefield; it is also the battle for the hearts and minds of people. For the latter the media plays the main role. If that battle is difficult, divert their attention by opening another front. September 11 diverted the attention from the prevailing economic troubles. Since then it has been Afghanistan and now Iraq. If things get bogged down in Iraq even while Afghanistan is not quite done yet, what can the US turn our eyes to? The bland sanitized muzak repeated over and over again will not work for too long.
Adolf Hitler was a despicable person but not dumb. "What luck for rulers that people do not think", he is claimed to have said. People, take heed. Think!
During these troubled times listening to Creedence Clearwater Revival can calm the mind and bring back memories of another world: "[if] you're gonna find the world is smouldering come on home to Green River".
