Consider this reversal of roles: In 1956 during the Suez crisis "it was Britain and France that launched a military action aimed at toppling a Middle Eastern dictator, Nasser of Eygpt - and it was the United States which worried about legality and the international impact of intervention without a wider mandate... [Britain and France were] bent on intervention and increasingly impatient of the time-wasting pantomime at the United Nations..." From the print edition of the Economist March 22-28, 2003.

From William Sunderman the centenarian who just passed away comes this piece of advice to retirees: "I am convinced that one of the most important items for longevity is the maintenance of a daily work schedule".

Dave Winer of Scripting News fame reporting a talk by Howard Dean on consequences of the Bush Doctrine: "Next year, how will we feel when China invades Taiwan because they think they have weapons of mass destruction?".

Saw a documentary on Swiss TV  yesterday on the investigation of the crash of Swissair flight SR111 about 4 years ago. A spark in the inflight entertainment system caused the surrounding insulation to catch fire. The insulation made of metalized mylar coating was tested by the FAA and declared to be non-flammable. Since two years the FAA has been asking airlines to replace that insulation. The Canadian TSB could make over 20 suggestions for improving the safety. The long meticulous investigation by the Canadians has paid off, in my opinion. Too late for the 229 lives that were lost.
