The latest book by Lynne CheneyLynne Cheney, wife of the vice president and former chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities, is a children's book celebrating the "diversity, tenacity and faith of the American people." Cheney talks with NPR's Susan Stamberg about the importance of teaching patriotism to kids, and about life after Sept. 11. Hear an extended version of the interview online. [NPR]

Near the end of the interview, Stamberg asks Cheney,

What about the impulse to say, "If you don't agree at this moment" -- especially in this moment of stress -- that "you're disloyal."?

and Cheney replies, "I wouldn't agree that that's a good thing to do."

We wonder whether Lynne has discussed this opinion with her husband, about whom the New York Times reports:

One Democratic official cited a speech by Mr. Cheney last week in which he defended Mr. Bush, calling "incendiary" any suggestion that the White House had advance knowledge of the Sept. 11 attacks. Mr. Cheney added, "Such commentary is thoroughly irresponsible and totally unworthy of national leaders in time of war."

The Democratic strategist said, "He was basically suggesting if you dare raise questions about us, we are going to question your patriotism."
