A Wounded Man, Still Singing That Sad Old Song at 72. Bobby Blue Bland is a connoisseur of quiet heartache and smoldering fury, and his set at the Brooklyn Academy of Music on Saturday was like one long sad song. By Jon Pareles. [New York Times: Arts]

The Real State of the Union

Thanks to David Broder's editorial in today's Washington Post, "State of the Homeland," I found out about this excellent feature in the Atlantic Monthly called "What is the The Real State of the Union?" As Broder says:

The 15 short essays, outlining domestic challenges facing the nation and proposing unconventional ways of dealing with them, comprise an exhilarating and mind-stretching way of thinking about where the United States stands at this moment.

I'll read about what Bush says next week, but there's no way in hell that I can tolerate listening to him.  Does anybody have any good suggestions for a movie rental?
