College students with Aspergers face daunting challenges. One has to do with the pitfalls of "dichotomous" thinking. For example, they may view drug or alcohol use as a "bad thing" which may lead them to adopt "a rule" about drug and alcohol use by others: "If I see students in the dorm using drugs or alcohol I will turn them in to the authorities." This, of course, is a sure-fire way to become the most hated kid in the dorm. So what are parents or friends to do about this? I, for one, think that we need to tell them NOT to do this, and use this encounter as an opportunity to discuss "gray area" in life versus strict adherence to rules.
Obviously, I have returned from Yellowstone where I camped out with my 6-year old daughter, Annika. Please remember that it is still summertime, and I am a college professor...so don't expect too much summer blogging.
