Interactive storytelling online and on CD-ROM brought MSNBC, The Chicago Tribune and Minnesota Public Radio top prizes in the new Batten Awards for Innovation in Journalism.
The MSNBC "Big Picture" features that took first place blended text with video, audio, quizzes, interactive polls and games to make what the award announcement called "playful, yet informative, packages" about Iraq, the 2002 elections, and the Oscars.
The awards are administered by J-Lab, the Institute for Interactive Journalism at the University of Maryland. San Jose Mercury News columnist and weblogger, Dan Gillmor, was a featured speaker at the event.
