Slashdot has the following story:
I fondly recall the days of yore when search engines could be manipulated just by sticking thousands of extraneous filler words in the META tags or hidden at the bottom of the page. Nowadays search engines work by more advanced techniques that generally don't fall prey to these simplistic tactics, but it'd be folly to presume them impervious. Does it still happen?"
Of course it does. The best way to fool Google is to start your own weblog.
For example, consider this: (1) My weblog is infrequently visited; even in the weblog community (whatever that is), few people indeed would recognize my name, or "Y. B. Normal" (2) In israel, there's another guy called "Ziv Caspi"[*] who runs a hugely successful organization (named after him) that prepares pupils for their finals (what we call "Bagrut"). His school has a web site. (3) There's a music group called "YBNormal". They also have a website. Who would you think is more recognizable in the real world?
Now go on and try out Google: Search for Ziv Caspi; search for Y. B. Normal. See what I mean? :-)
[*] I would have linked to him, but why give him free advertisement?
