XML advocates have been promising for years to make data exchange easy. However, the tools to work with XML have remained limited. Your average computer user would be hopelessly lost trying to maintain XML documents using the text editors that techies use. This may be about to change. Microsoft's Office 11 may be the first tool to bring XML "to the rest of us" [InfoWorld].

Time's 2002 Best Inventions is out. The Wheelman, Solar Tower, Air Surfer, Ultra-Bubble and Mini Sub were among the featured inventions that I found most interesting [Time].

For the first time, Microsoft has released quarterly earnings that are split up by operating group. It turns out that what was already expected is in fact true; Microsoft's monopoly on the desktop is funding their other losing ventures [Slashdot].

A recent SEC filing shows that they lose money in every business area except Windows (86% profit) and Office (79% profit).

Paying $300 for Windows XP is way too much. If I wanted to subsidize the XBox and MSN, I would purchase them outright. Instead, if I want to use Windows XP, I have to pay tolls on the rest of the Microsoft product line.
