As a response to the "Justice Sunday" event that the ultraconservative Family Research Council has put together for April 24, the Clergy and Laity Network and DriveDemocracy have put together the Social Justice Sunday counter-event in Louisville, KY.
For those of you who reside or will be in the area on the 24th, head over to Central Presbyterian at 318 W. Kentucky Street at 2:30 pm.
While many conservative organizations will be unabashedly attacking the Constitutional roots of the independent judicary that is an extremely critical part of our American democracy and masquerading as Christians for the purpose of political gain, faithful progressives will be making a stand and hopefully garnering some media attention in order to demonstrate to the US and the world that the conservative religious right does not represent a large and ever growing number of Christians in the United States.
The Christian Right has designated April 24 "Justice Sunday"; it would better be labeled "Just Us" Sunday.
The Family Research Council & Focus on the Family are planning a big telecast for April 24, designed to generate a backlash against what they allege is an "activist" federal judiciary. On the heels of a Christian Coalition Washington D.C. rally held under the banner "Confonting the Judicial War on Faith," the Family Research Council alleges activist federal judges are engaged in a "conspiracy to rob us of our Christian heritage and our religious freedoms."
Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn) is taking part in Sunday's telecast, a man who swore to protect, uphold and defend the U.S. Constitution. He is now engaged in trashing another branch of the government whose independence the Constitution guarantees. And he is identifying himself with the complaints of one religious faith at the expense of all others, rather than protecting the separation of church and state. Is there any real jeopardy to Christian beliefs in the U.S. What’s going on here?

There is no "judicial war on faith" or conspiracy against Christians in this country. Sadly, there is a war against the judiciary branch of government and against judicial independence. And in this war we all must stand up and be counted on the side of Constitutional government and the separation of powers.
This is a wonderful opportunity for progressive Christians to gather together, pray for the dim-looking future of our country, and to obtain some wider exposure. Be there if at all possible, or at the very least, continue to check in on the BuildingBeloved website for updates
Here’s some more info on the group organizing Social Justice Sunday from two of its leaders.
The Building the Beloved Community initiative recently launched with over 60 sponsoring organizations, including Faithful America, TrueMajority.org, NCC, UCC, UUA, Sojourners, Tikkun, and United for Peace and Justice.
This really has the potential to be a great event. Progressive Christians have begun to organize and mobilize considerably over the last 6 months or so, but we have a lot of catching up to do and a lot of work ahead of us. If there was any possible way for me to be there, I’d be all over it. This will be a great way to meet up with people and build social networks for future action.
