'Stuart Nelson, the head veterinarian of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, has been testing the hearts of sled dogs to see if ventricular premature deploarizations [VPDs], or out-of-sequence heartbeats, might be linked to cardiac arrest. Because the sled dogs are distance runners, their hearts are similar to those of human marathoners, so the results of Nelson's study could help answer why some human athletes die suddenly of cardiac arrest...'
