'Two white South African policemen who set dogs on three black Mozambican immigrants were found guilty of assault on Tuesday. The attack had been planned as an exercise to cure Guitto's dog of its reluctance to bite. Humane Society tips: affording veterinary care NM Tips from the Humane Society for covering that unexpected veterinary bill:

  • Ask your veterinarian if he or she will let you work out a payment plan.
  • Contact your local shelter. Some shelters operate or know of local subsidized veterinary clinics or veterinary assistance programs.
  • Use your credit card. Ask for a higher credit limit or a cash advance.
  • Call your bank. Ask about loan programs, second mortgages, or other options. Consider borrowing from your life insurance policy, vacation savings, kids' education fund, or retirement program.
  • Ask your employer for a salary advance.
  • Alert family and friends and ask them each for a $25 loan.
  • Pawn your stuff. TVs and VCRs can be replaced. Your pet can't.
  • Consider taking on an extra part-time job or temping.  [HSUS]

The Humane Society cautions that not every pet will survive a catastrophic illness, even with the best medical care. (Recently, some friends of our incurred a substantial vet bill. Rather than allow us to help them out a bit, they chose to dip into their child's educational savings. It's difficult to balance providing for children and pets on a budget.)

Dog attacks can be prevented, expert says Canada Although police say evidence in  the killing of a four-year-old Brunswick boy by rottweilers points to an accidental tragedy, dog experts say otherwise:

' Shelagh MacDonald, spokeswoman for the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies, based in Ottawa, said that dog attacks should never occur and that criminal charges should be laid when they do. 'They are absolutely preventable. No dog should be left unsupervised with a four-year-old. Whoever was in charge should be held accountable... ' [Globe and Mail] Some people disagree, saying some dog breeds are dangerous.

If only life were so simple. The boy's father thought his child was upstairs, watching Saturday morning cartoons; the dogs were outside, exercising in their dog run; while the father was working in his basement, the child walked downstairs and let himself outside to the dog run... Senseless tragedies do happen and can be counted on to occur, in an imperfect world. So did Fred Astaire, Fatty Arbuckle, Theodore Roosevelt and Thomas Edison. Petey, the Little Rascals' dog, was a pit bull. The most decorated soldier in World War I was Stubby -- a pit bull...'
