[Note to readers:  my spouse almost became road kill while walking to the metro this morning: two cars collided at full speed and veered off the road right into his pedestrian path; the 4-wheel-drive careened over the sidewalk, sped a hundred feet on grass and hit a tree (just missing him by two feet); the other car went over the sidewalk too, careening into a sidestreet sign. He saw the cars as they veered towards him and he ran backwards (no time to turn around). I heard the impact from 3 blocks away, but I had no idea what it meant (it sounded like a loud metallic explosion). Everyone survived without a scratch; their cars didn't. He later phoned me and told me about the accident, saying 'today is party day... I'm still here on earth...' I dropped everything, bought some flowers and took them to his office, took him out to lunch, and took him home without returning to work... today is party day... we're celebrating... ]
