Hot DC area weather is hard on pets
Most dogs are just as vulnerable as little children when it comes to hot summer weather. Hot weather, especially humid weather like DC, Virginia, and Maryland's, means you must take precautions on outings for your dog. They are: 1) never leave your dog alone in the car, even if you think it's only for a couple of minutes. Some dogs can die within 8 minutes in a hot car, EVEN with the windows 'cracked.' A chow or heavy coated dog will suffer heat stroke quickly. 2) Bring plenty of water for your dog. Dogs need fresh water; dogs perspire through their tongues and feet pads. 3) If your dog goes to the beach, don't let him drink the ocean water (it's dehydrating).Don't let him drink out of puddles either; giardia and other diseases and parasites may linger in contaminated water. Some dogs need special care in hot weather and should be kept inside if they are uncomfortable. Our chow can take about 5 minutes of extremely hot weather and then he's panting and asking to come inside, even with his heavy coat shaved...
