It's probably related to the entire Tolkien phenomenon still in my head, and I was reminded of it in an e-mail from Kerstin with an intended photo of Kai that included a placenta shot. The ideas of what we find fulsome, I wonder, how much is an aesthetic or "moral" absolute and how much is learned. Would a baby recoil from Gollum? Or be curious. How do we learn fear? How do we overcome it.
Renee talked tonight about having someone with a towel on his head (a towel head, is what I think she meant to say) come into the restaurant and her own struggle with her prejudice. While I empathisized with her struggle, I couldn't help asking if he had a bathrobe on as well. Which Stu and I, rightfully so, found hilarious. It wasn't actually meant to poke fun at her, but it does underscore how little we understand about other cultures period, let alone differences between Shiite and Sunni muslims, and the fact that this guy was probably a Sikh. I went on about how freaked out I am personally by those men who wear the plaid skirts without any underwaer and play sheeps stomachs.
