It's 2am on Monday now, or Sunday, as I count it, and civilization is beginning to crumble again. I think of all the monks centuries ago mired in their thankless scribing. Preserving, as civilization does, beauty - not without editorial content and filtering, but enough to make sure all is not lost when the next dark ages, the next armageddon, is upon us. Somewhere, right now, to the sun rising over a mountain, I can almost smell the sound of monks chanting. As they have for hundreds and hundreds of years.
I see civilization as progress through conservation. This is not a cultural war. And those waging it now in the name of tradition undermine the values that keep us whole, warm around the campfire earth as we hurl through eons of darkness.
