Adaptive Path's Alexa Andrzejewski asks What does experience design have to do with sustainability? in the context of discussing Valerie Casey's Designers Accord. The post caught my eye because I recently worked with Valerie on an interview for an upcoming issue of ACM Interactions. And it seems to me that sustainability has a lot to do with experience design (and vice versa). For instance, I've been recycling for close to 40 years now, and I've always thought that more folks would recycle if we just made it easier. Which finally happened when the garbage companies started handing out recycling bins. Perhaps not optimal (there are still those TVs and computers and monitors to dispose of), but an improvement over driving 20 miles to the recycling center. Make the experience at least tolerable and not a chore and folks will do the right thing.
