Contemporary Theory of Dreaming, in Scientific American, via Backwards City. "Thus we consider a possible (though certainly not proven) function of a dream to be weaving new material into the memory system in a way that both reduces emotional arousal and is adaptive in helping us cope with further trauma or stressful events."

Does Lex know about this?

Sheldon101 says the apology by Tim Chavez for his error-ridden column on Iraq was not broad enough. "Chavez needs a write a second correction. And since this error is much more serious, he needs to write an apology to everyone the earlier, uncorrected error, falsely insulted. The Tennessean needs to explain how and why this happened."

Lots of interesting stuff at Romenesko about Chavez, war reporting from home, and the WSJ reporter who dared tell the truth. Keep scrolling...Jim, you really need permalinks in your letters column.

Preliminary schedule for BloggerCon at Stanford.

Can I sneak out of my own session? The other two at that time both promise to be great.

Guilford County has seen an upsurge in voter registration, reports the N&R's Matt Williams, first on his blog and then in the paper.

"From July 1 to Sept. 30 of this year, 14,000 voters joined the rolls for the first time in the county. In 2000, that number was closer to 8,000..."

"...As of Oct. 1, there were 291,339 registered voters in the county.

The statewide deadline for new registrations and address changes is Friday. Applications received or postmarked by that date will be processed in time for the Nov. 2 general election."
