•••"Luther" Film Slated for Big Screens This Fall 2003

Just got a note from Paul McCain, the interim CEO of Concordia Publishing House (the LCMS's publishing house, which published my little Bible study booklet this spring) through his Cyberbrethren eNews list about an upcoming biographical film on Martin Luther:

We promised to keep our mouths shut about the movie until we were given a "green light" to talk about it. The green light was given. Now, I have been given permission and encouragement to share the following information.

AAL, not Thrivent, undertook a massive project. A modern movie depicting the life, struggle and faith of Martin Luther. They have attempted to go first class with this movie, with major actors and beautiful settings and scenes filmed in various locations in Europe. The choirs of our sister church in Latvia were used to record portions of the "awesome" musical score.

I was informed by our board member, Dr. Gene Edward Veith, that one of the potential distributors who viewed a rough cut of the movie several months ago, a man who is also a Christian, came away from the screening calling the movie, "The Lutheran Braveheart."

McCain also quotes a Message from Dennis Clauss of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans as follows:

After nearly four years of work, I am pleased to give you advance notice that the motion picture "Luther" will be released in theaters across the U.S. on September 26th (and in Europe beginning October 31st). "Luther" is presented as an epic story with all the majestic pageantry, suspense-filled drama, and historical spectacle that people expect on the big screen. And the musical score is awesome.

We have pulled together a team of "A List" industry firms to help market and distribute "Luther." These firms that have handled blockbuster movies like "A Beautiful Mind," "Spiderman," "Lion King," "The Madness of King George," "Erin Brockovich," "The English Patient," and "Shakespeare in Love."

Next week press releases will formally announce information about "Luther" to the public. Following these initial press releases, a barrage of marketing publicity will roll out over the next three months. A special website -- www.lutherthemovie.com --- has gone live with "teaser material." At present it's simply a "marker," but it will grow substantially in content and features in the weeks ahead, everything from movie clips to theater locations, times and advance ticket purchase.

Reactions to the movie from focus groups have been extremely positive. If these reactions hold, we are about to launch a movie with a Christian message that succeeds with mass market audiences --- a rarity in today's entertainment world.

Here's hoping the heretic's film lives up to the hype (Flash required).
