•••Being There, Between Now and Then
Ten years ago I sat on the sanctuary steps with a group of children, learning to preach and teach. Those little ones have aged, travelled and gathered here with me today. Some of their faces resemble so clearly their parents whom I have not seen in a decade, people I've never forgotten. Some remembered me clearly, others vaguely, a handful not at all -- having not seen me since they were first learning to walk.
It's a sweet joy, humbling and warm, to behold them at work. The task at hand is common painting: rollers rolling over worn walls, brushes edging their ways along hallways I often walk alone -- toward tragedy and trial, or from it. Today I stood in a strange juxtaposition of faith and sight, together with these little ones now ten years bigger than they were.
What I saw was a difference I made ten years ago that still matters to them as much as to me. Where I saw it was in a place where I sometimes struggle to believe the benefits of my ministry here will be anything but a fleeting comfort between the desperate situations the tribal members face day to day, month to month, year after year.
The delectable, surreal sensation of standing between a precious past and the entirely unknowable, invisible future was mine today. I struggle for words to describe it. Perhaps it's best to say no more. Some things get lost in the telling of them.
Today makes me eager to see what God will set before my eyes ten years from now. Until then...
