The upcoming Matisse show at the North Carolina Museum of Art is described in detail at the museum website.
Now that the show is just weeks away, I'm reposting the piece I put up last May. Even in tiny electronic form, these images give me a thrill. Claribel and Etta Cone wanted people to see the works they collected. As I've discussed with many members of our extended family, having a good-sized chunk of the Cone Collection come to North Carolina fulfills that vision in an especially appropriate and pleasing way.
And as noted -- the Weatherspoon's related show is about to go up, too.
Here's my May 15 post:
Matisse and Picasso in North Carolina
Last night I got a preview of a show that opens Oct. 10 at the NC Museum of Art in Raleigh -- a blockbuster featuring works from the Cone collection at the Baltimore Museum of Art.
NCMA director Larry Wheeler and curator of European art David Steel have put together a pretty great exhibition, including:

Henri Matisse Seated Odalisque, Left Knee Bent, Ornamental Background and Checkerboard 1928 Oil on canvas The Cone Collection BMA 1950.255

Henri Matisse Large Reclining Nude (also known as The Pink Nude) 1935 Oil on canvas The Cone Collection BMA 1950.258

Henri Matisse Purple Robe and Anemones 1937 Oil on canvas The Cone Collection BMA 1950.261

Vincent Van Gogh Landscape with Figures 1889 The Cone Collection BMA
...plus works by Picasso, Gauguin, Cézanne, Bonnard, Monet, Rodin, Degas, Modigliani, Braque, Léger and Giacometti. Baltimore wouldn't part with Matisse's Blue Nude or Cezanne's Mont Ste. Victoire, but otherwise NC got pretty much what it asked for.
Greensboro's Weatherspoon Art Museum will hold a related show on Matisse and American drawing, which opens Sept. 26. The Weatherspoon has a great collection of Matisse lithographs, some bronzes, and a few Picasso drawings, too.
