Amit Tyagi From Nairobi Kenya
Market opportunity in East Africa for international film/TV? Amit Tyagi reports from Nairobi, Kenya. The market section of the Seventh Africa Cine Week, the MAP-TV 2004 section, has announced its list of thirty-one confirmed participants. What is very interesting is that — despite the sizeable presence of East African TV broadcasters, most of whom buy foreign programmes in considerable quantity — there are no foreign programme suppliers/distributors in this list. If you go to the Sithengi market in Cape Town, South Africa, the place is teeming with sellers/distributors of foreign programmes — from American majors to distributors selling dubbed Italian programmes, to Malaysian and Chinese programme producers — they can all be found chasing African broadcasters. But here, the market is going by without any foreign programme seller noticing! Or is it simply that this market has grown without anyone realising that it has? I wouldn't know the answer, but I suspect there's a niche waiting to be filled here. [Amit Tyagi: Cinema Minima Correspondent in East Africa] [Cinema Minima]

Broadband Wireless Networks
France to Get Nationwide WiMax. Altitude Telecom, the only owner of a nationwide 3.5 Ghz license in France, plans to use Alvarion gear to build a broadband wireless network in the country: The Alvarion gear is based on WiMax, though not yet certified as WiMax because the certification process hasn't started yet. Altitude will start out with four counties and move on from there. It's interesting to note that Altitude plans to use the wireless network to serve small to large businesses. That target market is the same market that broadband wireless operators have traditionally targeted. WiMax, however, has often been touted as a DSL replacement that could be used to serve the residential market. Perhaps Altitude will use the next generation of WiMax gear to target the residential market.... [Wi-Fi Networking News]
