Water and Mars
Water and Mars: the 'magic triangle' for life. Scientists will be thrilled by any data the new US mission to Mars gets that point to abundant water on Mars even if, at present, we only know it to be ice rather than liquid and located at the poles. [Physics Org]

Zine Review: Doris
Zine Review: Doris.

The zine Doris has been around for quite a while … 1991 to be exact. Written by Cindy Crabb, an anthology of Doris is now available. Even though this is written by a woman, Cindy’s writings resonate whether you are a male or female. Cindy touches on many different topics. No matter how mundane or how touching, Doris documents Cindy’s interesting life. Over the course of this anthology Cindy touches upon easy topics cooking, music and tackles more emotional aspects of life like rape, abortion, and death. What impressed me was how the zine started off being as articulate and thoughtful a zine could be by a beginner zinester. It takes many people years to be able to communicate via words, yet Cindy seems to have a knack of communicating.

Doris is a zine relic as Cindy’s zine is DIY at it’s finest. I believe Cindy was born to create this zine as it seems like she almost effortlessly created Doris with her typewritter, pen, and a glue stick. And for ten years Ms. Crabb had not skipped a beat.

Zine reviews are now going to be a regular feature here at Mystery and Misery. Every weekend, I will review a couple zines in hopes I can get a few readers to explore a long lost art of zine creation. Included in each review will be information on how to order the zine. Most zines are inexpensive and are just as, if not more, entertaining than the racks of magazines at your local conglomorate book store. Paper zines were around way before blogs, and still to this day, hold a special place in my heart. If you would like your zine to be featured here, please send me an e-mail.

Thank you to Microcosm Publishing for keeping the zine scene alive.

Feedster Top 100
The Mediaburn Radio Weblog is charting at number 97, and has been in the Top 100 since February. Six months on the list.

This is quite good for an electronic publication that has held the idiosynchrasies of it's editor and other bloggers in high regard. In fact, I would say a new type of media has been born here. It's both art and media.

The subject matter has been broad in scope. The vision has been idealistic. It's pretty much worked.

Our audience is not extremely large, nor is it extremely small. The blog is a unique and influential voice.

I've called Mediaburn a successful prototype. We now expect the freedom that it has heralded.

Mediaburn will "go bigger". The next step will be to keep the honesty and uniqueness, while increasing the exposure. If this can be done, it will be another first.

Mediaburn is very flexible. Mediaburn can make compromises up to a point, and retain it's character. The good news is - the demand is increasing. Demand for independent media has been there for awhile, but it's coming to light.

Mediaburn is an idea and a design. It's a production company. Knowledge, ideas, design and production.

Bringing Solar Energy to Its Full Potential
Gov't outlines research needed to improve solar tech.

To help achieve the Bush Administration's goal of increased use of solar and other renewable forms of energy, the Department of Energy's (DOE) Office of Science has released a report describing the basic research needed to produce "revolutionary progress in bringing solar energy to its full potential in the energy marketplace." The report resulted from a workshop of 200 scientists held earlier this year.
