The Scary Truth About Attorney General Ashcroft . . .
Thanks to TalkLeft for pointing out yesterday's editorial in the Baltimore Sun calling for John Ashcroft's retirement, the editorial points out:
He all but charges treason against those who raise civil liberty concerns. Such critics give "ammunition to America's enemies and pause to America's friends" and "erode our national unity and diminish our resolve," Mr. Ashcroft said. He contended that complaints about his heavy-handed investigative methods are designed to "scare peace-loving people with phantoms of lost liberty."
But he's the one who is truly scary.
In my opinion the Sun calls this one accurately. Apparently, Mr. Ashcroft needs a lesson in the history of our republic and the Bill of Rights. If I remember my civics lessons acurately it was only because of the agreement to limit the power of the federal government with the Bill of Rights and to "secure the blessings of liberty" that the Constitution and our country got off the ground.
