ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Enrich Iowa Letter of Agreement for FY 2005 TODAY

With the due date Aug 20 postmark, several NEILSA public libraries have not yet returned the Enrich Iowa Letter of Agreement for FY 2005. The agreement was mailed to every public library and is also on the web at:

http://www.silo.lib.ia.us/for-ia-libraries/enrich-ia/index.html

Reminder(s):
1. Did you have any trustees whose terms have lapsed and you forgot to have your mayor & council/supervisors appoint ot re-appoint?
2. If you have made changes to your enabling ordinance since you sent a copy to the Regional/SLI it would be a good idea to send the LSA a copy of your existing and current ordinance.
3. It is a political year, you may have noticed, so remember to review your meeting and posting policies in light of the material at: http://www.state.ia.us/government/iecdb/forms_brochures/brochures/public_funds/publicfunds.htm

EYE-OPENER: (unedited)

Good Morning: This time in EYE-OPENER
1) ILA Conference Commercials
2) Deadline = Enrich Iowa Renewal Due August 20th
3) Meetings / Events This Week
1) ILA Conference Commercials: In this fourth installment of "ILA Conference Commercials," here's a look at what's on tap for Thursday of ILA Conference Week (October 13-15 in Sioux City) This year's conference theme is "FROM RIVER TO RIVER LIBRARIES BUILD COMMUNITY." Dr. Kathleen de la Pena McCook, author of A PLACE AT THE TABLE, is the keynote speaker on Thursday morning, October 14th. From the University of Tampa, her keynote address is titled "Community Building Through Cultural Heritage." Following the keynote address, here's just a sampling of the day's breakout sessions:
  • Storytelling 101: Getting Started
  • Does Your Building Invite Them In? Attracting the Community Through Merchandising and Decorating Cents
  • County Contracts
  • Reading Lessons from Oprah and the Local Grocery Store
  • The Wild, Wild Web: Tools You Can Use
  • Disaster Response: A Tale of Two Libraries
  • AND MORE!!
Here's "the more:" Thursday night's banquet speaker is Iowa mystery and detective author Donald Harstad from Elkader, whose address is entitled "Libraries and Why We Love Them." Social hour begins at 6:00, the banquet begins at 7:00PM.
And throughout the day on Thursday: your chance to tour the exhibits and take note of the many silent auction items on display in the exhibit hall. Proceeds from the silent auction benefit the Iowa Library Association Foundation. Next week: a look at Friday of conference week--stay tuned:-)
2) Deadline = Enrich Iowa Renewal Due August 20th: A reminder that your library needs to renew its participation in ENRICH IOWA by returning the "ENRICH IOWA LETTER OF AGREEMENT." This is a one-page form that simply asks for your library name, address, etc., and for your intention to participate in OPEN ACCESS, ACCESS PLUS, and DIRECT STATE AID. You'll see each of these programs listed on this form, with a box beside each. Simply check each box, sign the form, and return it to the State Library by August 20th--this Friday is the deadline. Wonder whether your library's "Letter of Agreement" has already been received at the State Library? Easy to check by going to this page on their website:
http://www.silo.lib.ia.us/for-ia-libraries/enrich-ia/index.html You're welcome to call NWILS with questions, but call soon:-)
3) Meetings / Events This Week: Three programs of note happening this week. This Wednesday 8-18-04, the State Library is holding a class over the ICN called "PERSONALIZE YOUR EBSCOHost," providing instruction in using EBSCO's administrative module. It runs from 9:30AM--11:30AM; if you miss it this Wednesday, it will be repeated on September 9th (1:30--3:30 then) Be aware that this particular class does not cover searching techniques; instead the focus is on customizing EBSCO for your library and your patrons. There is no charge for this workshop; however, you must register online and print the handouts to bring with you that day. Go to: http://www.silo.lib.ia.us/for-ia-libraries/continuing-ed/cecat.htm#August Here's a look at the content:
  • Customize Services and Profiles
  • Customize Search pages
  • Customize Remote Access
  • Customize Database Options
  • Multilingual Options
  • My EBSCOhost/Page Composer
  • Authentication Options
  • Reports & Statistics

This Friday 8-20-04, the Gates Foundation is sponsoring a program called "SUSTAINABILITY SEMINAR," also over the ICN. This program provides additional support for libraries that received the Gates-granted computers. Topics will include an overview of the Gates computers operating systems; overview of support issues; and ongoing use and development of public access computing. For a detailed description of content, go to: http://www.pacomputing.org/sustain/2kxptopics.aspx

Again, online registration and handouts are found on the State Library's website. Please print the handouts to bring with you that day. (Note the handouts are PowerPoint slides; the Gates computers all have PowerPoint, so you shouldn't have any problems opening that program and printing the slides...) The "SUSTAINABILITY SEMINAR" runs from 10:00AM--3:00PM, with an hour allowed for lunch on your own) This program is sponsored and paid for by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. There is no charge to attend, although registration is required. To register and to see the ICN locations, handouts, and full description details, go to: http://www.silo.lib.ia.us/for-ia-libraries/continuing-ed/cecat.htm#August

Finally rounding out this week, on Saturday 8-21-04 NWILS is sponsoring a board development workshop entitled "TRUSTEE TIME & TALENT." This takes place at the Carrollton Inn in Carroll, IA. Designed especially for library trustees, this program presents three key aspects of using trustees' time and talent to greatest advantage: (1) methods for recruiting prospective trustees to fill vacancies; (2) ideas for keeping trustees actively engaged with meaningful, roll-appropriate tasks; and (3) retraining trustees through ongoing educational opportunities. Ideas will encourage boards to focus on "Big Picture" issues and on their role as advocates. Plenty of time for small group exercises and discussion. Registration at 9:00AM; program from 9:30--2:30, with lunch served on-site at the Carrollton Inn. The cost is $15.00. If you've not yet signed up, please do so ASAP to ensure enough handout packets--online registration is found on NWILS website: http://www.nwils.lib.ia.us/class.html "TRUSTEE TIME & TALENT" will be presented again on November 13th in Milford...

Lots of action this week--thanks for reading:-)

Summary:
The website is becoming a less prominent locus of experience as people use search engines to bring up answers to their current questions. How can sites cope with masses of freeloaders?

CE: {That would be classes with credits toward recertification.}
NEILSA provides and/or teaches continuing education classes on topics that are specific to the needs of the librarians AND that are not offered elsewhere. For example: while we certainly have the expertise to teach a class on completing and filing the SLD e-rate forms, we have no intention of doing a class on the subject. Why? Because: 1. Pamela Pfitzenmaier, Ph.D. Director, Educational Telecommunications, Iowa Public Television teaches a fine series of ICN classes on the topic and
2. most of the NE libraries are in the Consortia and so do not need the detailed information about Forms 470, 471, 472, 486 and on and on and....

What we do offer is 1 and 2 hour sessions on specific topics at county meetings at no charge for an appropriate number of credits toward recertification. We also offer classes on library specific topics, such as the Cataloging class and the upcoming "Get Organized" class for librarians and trustees. If you need a class on bookkeeping you can get it at our fine community colleges or in some high schools adult education offerings.
Finally, we also offer a Mentoring program, special classes for boards, and individual topic(s) of concern classes. But all of these are offered to individuals or to specific libraries and are not (generally) announced to all.

You are also encouraged to attend classes offered by other LSA's, announced classes offered by BCR, or classes offered through the State Library CE catalog. On several occasions the Friday Notes 2 has promoted classes offered by other organizations such as the "Preservation 101" series offered by ICPC, or the tutorials offered by ALA, Self Directed Learning Opportunities and classes offered by Web Junction.

IF you need something, you have but to ask and NEILSA will be happy to help you find what you need, develop an individual education plan or investigate a topic of interest to you. BUT you have to ask, we gave up our mind reader with the last budget cut.

Building Consulting Grants

The State Library allocates Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) funds to provide Iowa libraries with building consultation. These grants allow librarians to get professional advice from impartial consultants who provide guidance and recommendations to library staff, city officials and the community on the extent and complexity of a building project. The building consulting grants have been funded by the State Library since fiscal year 1994. Grants of up to $2,500 will be awarded as funds are available. A library that has received the entire $2,500 grant is not eligible for another one.
