ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Iowa Small Library Association Fall Meeting
September 30, 2004
Waukee Public Library

Collection Development in an Electronic Age Print, CD or online? Audio, video, print or all three? DVD and/or
videotape? Spoken word audio tape or CD, abridged or unabridged? What about e-books? Making collection decisions has never been more complex, with constantly changing formats and reader interests and a proliferation of competing demands. This workshop provides tools to help selectors balance print and electronic resources.

You do not need to be a member of the Iowa Small Library Association to attend. For additional information and link to registration page, go to:
PATHFINDERS:
NOTE -
Your editor does not intend to reprint things from Iowalib very often but this is a real tool that you should have in your "little kit of tricks".
Several people mentioned pathfinders and I wanted to let everyone know about a collaborative project funded by LSTA, administered through the State Library:  THE Pathfinder Project.   This project focuses on pathfinders as a tool for information literacy that could be used by any type of library.  The team developed what we'd like to think of as the ultimate pathfinder template.  :-)   It starts with an intro statement, a "scope" note about the subject and audience, then an introductory source, key resources ("if you can't go any further, here are 2-3 resources that you should look at"), background/reference material, books, journals and magazine articles, websites, and organizations/associations.  In addition, it includes "Search aids," to help the user in looking further for information: keywords to use when searching online, subject headings if looking in printed catalogs and indexes, Dewey and LC numbers, Indexes and abstracts, and library catalogs.  All this in an attractive format, on one double-sided sheet.

On the project's website you will find the template, a help sheet for using the template, and a toolkit to help you in creating your own pathfinder.  In addition you will find completed pathfinders--the "top ten" topics from a poll of libraries and, just beginning, some pathfinders created by librarians who attended workshops in 3 Library Service Areas last month.  The pathfinders are "generic" in nature so you can print out the pdf versions and use "as is" (it will say things like, "your local library's catalog") or you can download the pathfinders in Word doc format to customize it to your library--add resources you own, put your library's name on it, etc.   We invite you to submit pathfinders you have created with the template to the project, so it can be put on the web and shared with other libraries.  (Mary Cameron tells me she is going to be working on some specifically for youth, and the list of pathfinders available indicates the intended audience.)

The project's website is at:

You will see copies of our Lewis and Clark pathfinder at the State Library/LSA booth at ILA--pick one up for your library!

Karen Burnes, on behalf of the Project team

Contact: Deborah Pope, dpope@Ezra-Jack-Keats.org; http://www.ezra-jack-keats.org/programs/minigrants.htm

Building Consulting Grants

The State Library allocates Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) funds to provide Iowa libraries with building consultation.  These grants allow librarians to get professional advice from impartial consultants who provide guidance and recommendations to library staff, city officials and the community on the extent and complexity of a building project.  The building consulting grants have been funded by the State Library since fiscal year 1994.  Grants of up to $2,500 will be awarded as funds are available. A library that has received the entire $2,500 grant is not eligible for another one.
