ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Would you like to automate your library catalog but the cost seems too high?

East Central Library Services can help you cut some of the expense.   ECLS can convert your shelf list to MARC records at a reasonable rate!

The advantages of having an outside service convert your records are enormous; staff time is kept to working with your library patrons, not spent endlessly cataloging on a computer that may or may not be available during library hours.  We work directly with you to prepare your shelf list.  We can convert your complete shelflist, or can work-as-you-get-them-done, whichever is more convenient.

ECLS charges 20 cents per converted record plus 35 cents for each diskette.  Compare this to commercial services and you can see the savings!  Contact Linda Lumsden, Administrative Assistant, East Central Library Services, llumsde@ecls.lib.ia.us or Debra Tobias, Consultant, dtobias@ecls.lib.ia.us for more information about getting your catalog on line today!!

Eunice says:
I’m sure you’ve all heard the book chosen for the 2005 All Iowa Reads project is Master Butchers Singing Club by Louise Erdrich.  Thanks to the Iowa Center for the Book, NEILSA (along with the other 6 LSAs) has multiple copies of Master Butchers Singing Club that we're ready to lend to any Northeast library sponsoring a book discussion in the coming year.  Here's the plan:

NEILSA received 18 paperbacks, plus 2 large prints, 1 audiotape and 1 CD version.  We've divided them into 2 sets of 9 books.  On a first-call-first-registered basis, we'll schedule use of the sets for a calendar month at a time.  Once your discussion group has finished, check for an enclosed list to see who is next in line.  If there isn’t a list, just give Denise a call.  We're asking each library to ship them on to the next destination.  So rather than have you mail the boxes back to Waterloo for us to turn around and mail them out again, we're asking you to route them amongst each other.

If you need the large type, audiotape or CD version – let Denise know.  We’ll be booking and mailing them separately.  We think this will greatly streamline the process and use everyone's time – and postage – most effectively.  Many thanks to the Center for the Book for their generosity!  The sets are ready to circulate in January, so call early if you’ve got a group ready to jump in.   You can reach Denise at luppen@neilsa.org or 800-772-2023.

EYE-OPENER:  (lightly edited)
Good Morning!  Back from a long Thanksgiving weekend means a Tuesday edition of EYE-OPENER:

1)  Summer Reading Materials Arrive for '05

2)  ICN Sites for LIBRARY 101

3)  Plover P.L.'s Halloween Spirit

4)  Meetings / Events This Week

1)  Summer Reading Materials Arrive for '05:  By now, libraries should have received the summer reading materials for summer 2005.   Next summer's theme is Dragons, Dreams, & Daring Deeds.  The packet of summer materials should have included:
(a)  Children's / YA Summer Library Manual
(b)  After-school programming resources
(c)  2005 incentive order form
(d)  2005 workshop schedule

A heads-up about the workshop schedule.  In the past few years, N.W. Summer Library Workshops landed in Everly and Arthur.  This coming year, the Northwest workshop moves to the Cherokee Community Center; the date is March 1st.  However, there are two near-Northwest locations that might be closer for some of you: February 18th at Algona Public Library and March 2nd at Churdan Community Center.  Again, the workshop schedule included in the mailed packet shows all dates and locations around the state.  These in-person workshops will be worth 3 c.e. credits.  This year's presenters will be Marilyn Tilley from Churdan and Linda Fox from Oskaloosa.

2)  ICN Sites for LIBRARY 101:  In last week's EYE-OPENER, we advertised the next opportunity to attend LIBRARY 101: Friday December 10th.  In recent weeks, Northwest LSA has welcomed new directors to Ida Grove and Correctionville--and soon-to-be Woodbury County and Ringsted by year's end.   With an eye toward our newest directors and other staff asking to attend, here's the Northwest ICN locations we've landed: Carroll DMACC campus, Moville-Woodbury Central High School, Correctionville-River Valley High School, Spencer P.L. (pending approval) and Sioux City East High School.  We'll send a flyer to our newest directors when all ICN rooms are confirmed.  In the meantime, call or email NWILS if you'd like to attend.

LIBRARY 101 is an orientation for brand new library directors, presented 4 times each year over the ICN.  This program helps new directors become better acquainted with LSA and State Library services, along with new service standards and several statewide programs.  LIBRARY 101 serves as a broad overview and is meant as a prelude to the more in-depth Public Library Management courses.  New support staff and new trustees are also welcome to attend.  The class runs from 9:00AM--12:00PM and is worth 3 c.e. credits.

3)  Plover P.L.'s Halloween Spirit:  One of Northwest LSA's smallest libraries has some of the biggest ambitions.  Thanks to Marge Spear from Plover P.L. for sharing news of their library's very successful pumpkin decorating contest.  With a town population of 95, 49 of those people participated in the Halloween festivities, picking up and decorating 49 pumpkins.  All the pumpkins were on display at the library.  Adults were judged in 3 categories and children judged by age group.  Prizes were donated by neighboring towns' businesses and a great time was had by all, proving that libraries are actively involved in communities large and small:-)

4)  Meetings / Events This Week:  The Norelius Community Library in Denison continues with their PLANNING FOR RESULTS project this Wednesday December 1st; the community planning team convenes there at 7:00PM.

That's it for this week.  Hope you all enjoyed a restful and grateful Thanksgiving!

Bonnie McKewon

Director, Northwest Iowa Library Services

Advocatvs Diaboli: This term has come to mean anyone who argues a position that he does not believe in, simply for the sake of arguing and/or promoting discussion; or to present a counter argument for a position he does believe in to another debater, for the purpose of testing the quality of the counter argument and identifying weaknesses in his own argument.
Q:  We like to say librarianship is a profession; What does this mean to YOU?

On the off chance you missed it -- You can do something.

The E-rate is in trouble.  Please consider contacting the Senators and FCC officers listed below to express your concern.  Note that this takes less than 5 minutes if you use the Legislative Action Center (link listed below.) This website identifies your legislator and generates a message developed by ALA's lobbyists.  Note that you may customize the message as you wish.

ALAWON: American Library Association Washington Office Newsline Volume 13, Number 100 December 2, 2004

In This Issue: Help Save E-rate! Contact Senate Leadership and the FCC Immediately!

The issue of funding delays for the E-rate program has reached a critical juncture.  Congress will be back in town on Monday, and must pass the legislative fix to get funds flowing again.  If Congress does not pass a fix before they adjourn, it will likely be many months before we have a solution to this urgent problem. Although another funding wave was sent this week, this is not the long-term fix that we need to solve the problem.
PLEASE

Contact Senate leadership before the close of business on Friday with the message that we need a long-term legislative fix to the program, and that it must come immediately so that library patrons and K-12 students do not lose vital telecommunications services. Messages will be most effective if they include local examples, either of the difference E-rate has made in your community, or of the budgetary hardships the funding delay has created.

Offices to contact include:

Frist R-TN

McConnell R-KY

Daschle D-SD

Reid D-NV

Byrd D-WV

McCain R-AZ

Gregg D-NH

Kennedy D-MA

You may call the Senate toll free at 1-800-839-5276.

Or to send an e-mail letter, please use the Legislative Action Center:

Please ALSO call or email Chairman Powell of the FCC with the same message:

phone: (202) 418-1000

CONSORTIA

There seems to be a lot of confusion about the e-rate program, especially among those who have never taken any training about the program, the Consortia suggestion is that you consider attending one of the classed on the ICN,
Form 471 training sessions this month on the following dates:

471 training's (3:30-5:30 p.m, all are repeat sessions):

December 9

December 13

December 15

December 16

If you are planning to apply for e-rate discounts for Year 2005 that begins July 1, 2005, you must have a technology plan that covers the period from July 1, 2005 to June 30, 2006.  If your current plan ends

December 31, 2005, you must send in a plan to cover that six months. You can send an update covering the time period or you can send in a new three-year plan.  Make sure that if submitting a new plan, you review the information on the State Library web site.  All plans must have the five required sections.  Especially review section V- Intent to Use. Wording has been added so that I can certify that you have sufficient funds on hand to pay for the non-discounted portion.  The budget sheet there is meant to be helpful to you. Send to me if completed.  Any new submitted plans should at minimum have similar wording to that printed in "red" lettering under section V.

Building Consulting Grants

The State Library allocates Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) funds to provide Iowa libraries with building consultation.  These grants allow librarians to get professional advice from impartial consultants who provide guidance and recommendations to library staff, city officials and the community on the extent and complexity of a building project.  The building consulting grants have been funded by the State Library since fiscal year 1994.  Grants of up to $2,500 will be awarded as funds are available. A library that has received the entire $2,500 grant is not eligible for another one.
