Keep the Law Free

Rory Perry is blogging the courts and doing his part to keep the law free.

[...] It's good to have lawyers and technologists of this caliber urging courts to deliver the law via rss/xml. As a public official who has implemented the measures Ernie recommends for one court of last resort, I know from personal experience that court environments can be difficult places to implement new technological ideas. The upside is that I've seen real tangible benefits from using blog technology to deliver public information. I've seen rss.xml feeds appear ranked high in the referrer logs for our official court site, and seen traffic to our court site triple through the various weblog pages I publish. A recent AP story recognized that blogs are good for courts.

I'll keep doing my part to make sure the law is free, including some upcoming modifications to my official court blogs that incorporate backlinking. Meanwhile, I hope to speak to court officials from around the world about this technology at next year's Eighth National Court Technology Conference. Faculty solicitations are due today, and guess what my topic will be? [Rory Perry's Weblog]

Patents Before Standard SOAP

I can see the day coming when we can no longer have a viable standards process if the patent process isn't reformed.

Patent claims a problem for next web services standard. Silicon.com Nov 7 2002 4:31AM ET

[...] According to documents on the working group's website, two companies, WebMethods and Epicentric, a subsidiary of Vignette, say they may have patents that cover the technology being used in the SOAP 1.2 standard. [...] [Moreover - IP and patents news]

Ageless Humor

I'm not as young as I used to be...

Jacob age 85, and Rebecca age 79 are all excited about
their decision to get married. They go for a stroll to
discuss the wedding, and on the way go past a drugstore.
Jacob suggests that they go in. He addresses the man
behind the counter:

"Are you the owner?"
The pharmacist answers, "Yes."

Jacob: "Do you sell heart medication?"
Pharmacist: "Of course we do."

Jacob: "How about medicine for circulation?"
Pharmacist: "All kinds."

Jacob: "Medicine for rheumatism?"
Pharmacist: "Definitely."

Jacob: "How about Viagra?"
Pharmacist: "Of course."

Jacob: "Medicine for memory?"
Pharmacist: "Yes, a large variety."

Jacob: "What about vitamins and sleeping pills?"
Pharmacist: "Absolutely."

Jacob: "Perfect! We'd like to register here for our
wedding gifts."

VeriSign -- Credit Where Due

I called VeriSign this morning. I spent a couple of hours last night rounding up all my recent letters from them about account changes, logins, and such, as well as all my domain paperwork. Turns out I actually have two domains still registered with them (glad I checked.)

I had previously tried to login to the VeriSign site and make changes to my errant e-mail address myself with no success. But this morning I got a helpful customer service agent on the phone and after about 20 minutes she had successfully changed the e-mail address and corrected my login info so it would work. I went back later and verified the changes. Sho'nuff, my e-mail address is right.

But I still can't consolidate the two remaining accounts under one sign-in because one is under a reseller/partner setup (Interland). No matter. Both the domains will be moved soon anyway. This is just way too much hassle for the money. Thanks for the helpful service, VeriSign, but it really is too little, too late.

Improving the Blog Experience

For what it's worth, Guy Alvarez makes some valid usability points in his recent blog article on Law.com. In To Blog or Not ... Guy says:

[...] Unless you take the time and effort to search the blog index (which contains message titles organized by date), negotiating your way through a blog can be a time-consuming and frustrating experience. [...]

It takes some thought on the part of the blog author to make the site navigable and friendly, whether that means doing a good job of getting Google-ized or spending time building well-structured archives and categories. The current incarnation of this site is one of the worst offenders. But I do recognize the issue and help is on the way. By November 15 blog cognosco should be back in step with decent usability standards, offering some assistance in navigating the morass.
