Marketing - telling the story from the right angle. Consider this: The InceptionOS Project has openings for coders to create an installation interface and setup tool. You see, they are not begging people to come and help them do the work, they have openings.
But when it comes to marketing few can match Apple. If you go to Apple's website on 07/16/2002 you'll see this gem: "The hottest games are built for Mac OS X". I can hardly imagine more bold-faced lie, maybe except "Apple - 95% of the market and counting". The only reason Apple can get (sort of) away with such statement is that the definition of "hot" is ambiguous (which is to say that there is none).
Apple wants your money. I just got an e-mail from Apple. They want me to purchase Mac OS X 10.2 (aka Jaguar) for a small fee of $129.00 (shouldn't that be over $150 given that it's "loaded with over a 150 compelling new features"? Don't sell yourself too cheap, Apple). My problem with that is that Mac OS X 10.2 is a small improvement over inadequate (e.g. in performance) Mac OS X 10.1.x. I sure hope that my Powerbook will just upgrade itself and I won't have to pay Apple for such small changes. But I've been disappointed before.
In related news: nothing interesting has been presented at Macworld this year.
