AFN week in Anchorage
At 9:30 this morning Daughter, a friend of hers, and I went down town to the AFN Native Arts Fair. It took up the entire bottom floor of the Egan Center. The quality of carving, beading, jewelry, dolls, etc was much higher this year and the cost was lower.
I purchased one Christmas gift, a carved bone belt buckle and Daughter gave me half of a great carved bracelet for Christmas. I was going to delay gratification and not wear it until she gave it to me for Christmas. However, I called her later this afternoon asking her to take it to work tomorrow so I can stop by and pick it up to prewear it to an event tomorrow noon. So much for delayed gratification.
There was a marvelous Eskimo doll nativity scene---a true collectors item. If I were into building a native art collection of any kind that would have been a "must have item." A couple of weeks ago the Anchorage Daily News ran a feature article about the woman and her daughter who make this particular style of dolls. Their dolls are always involved in doing something specific. I don't remember their names.
