Friday. Day Five and the NYSE. The last day.
We passed this every morning and evening on our way to and from Wall Street. I'd like to have a yard sculpture like this.

The Last Day
We didn't have to be at the Exchange until 9:30 today. After our usual continental breakfast, we heard from Dale Berstino, Senior VP of Human Resources. She stated that the Exchange has 50 interns working this summer---30 college students and 20 law school students. They are given meaningful projects to do as part of their internships. The Exchange does not accept sons and daughters of NYSE employees as interns.
At this time most entry level jobs are in the regulatory (accounting) and the market surveillance (research and writing skills) departments. All new hires need business writing skills, spelling, basic tech skills (Excel, Power Point, Word), oral presentation skills (concise and precise), and teamwork ability. So, teach kids research skills, collaboration, problem solving, and concise communication.
Our last conversations were with Michael Cohen.
Michael H. Cohen, 41, was named vice president, marketing communications for the New York Stock Exchange in February 2001. Mr. Cohen is responsible for the Exchange's advertising program, Partnership program, corporate identity, Education progams, merchandising and various other marketing and branding initiatives, including NYSE magazine.
We spent a lot of time talking about how to reach teachers and students. It is extremely difficult because the education world/business is so highly fragmented (an understatement). I think partnering is an efficient and effective approach. It seems to me that two natural partnerships are with the StockMarket Game (they are already doing some work together) and the Council on Economic Education (they have in the past and just need to renew the partnership). These two organizations already have connections with teachers in the classroom who are interested in economics and the stock market.
The Exchange is also considering adding a teachers forum to the education section of the website and trying a Teachers in Residency program. It is all about marketing and disseminating information and how to do it. Wish I had the answer to that question not only for the NYSE but also for the Slingerland Institute (another part of my life).
After lunch, we said our goodbyes. The staff. Murray Teitelbaum in the center with the green tie.
We then made one last stop at the gift shop and ended our incredible week at the NYSE.

Later in the afternoon my friend and I finished our double decker bus tour, she stopped at Macy's, and I came back to the hotel for dinner and sorting and packing.
