Two good articles, one from Podcasts Yahoo and the other from WindowsDevCenter provide instructions on how to experiment with podcasting with a pc, without an ipod (remember a podcast in its bare essence is just mobile audio). Even if you never do a public podcast, Audacity is a pretty good sound editor to check out and keep in your arsenal for creating recorded presentations.
I've had to shift my focus a bit this week and my IT play/experimentation, directed by some discussion among faculty about consistent virtual experiences for our students, has been with the Sakai Project and Open Software Portfolio. Sakai is a collaborative learning management system that is being developed by a number of universities following the open source model (community software development, open source, etc.). I'm working with Sakai as part of another group but I hadn't checked OSP out. So I played with the Online OSPDemo for about an hour trying to understand if and how documents created by students could be controlled by them for public or private viewing, commenting, etc. I'm pretty impressed although I hear there've been some complaints from faculty about sakai's debut on the UC campuses. The new version that's supposed to come out in November and the conference in December should bring better news.
