What a wanker!
Pieter van Zyl, who disrupted the test match last Saturday by storming onto the field and tackling the referee, shaming his whole nation, and giving SA rugby fans a bad name. I hope he is made to pay dearly for his stupidity.
I missed the match, (away for the weekend, see later post), but by all accounts, another thrilling, close-matched encounter. I have sympathy for the referee, what happened was inexcusable, but some press reports say he had a shocker, not for the first time, and that the crowd was rightly incensed. Let's hope that one of the outcomes is an improvement in the standard of refereeing.
Later: Here's what Nick Mallett has to say about the issue:
Fortunately, only a small proportion of our supporters are like that, and it left a bitter taste in my mouth. For me, it brought back memories of the abuse I endured as a Springbok coach. The hate-mail and the mystery phone calls - those guys are all cut from the same cloth.
Those types of supporters are boorish, aggressive, beer-swigging louts and although they claim to be the biggest rugby supporters in SA, all they manage to do is embarrass our country. Pieter van Zyl thinks he did a good thing out there on Saturday and he seems to be loving his time in the limelight (judging by what I have read on the internet from here).
Does he actually realise the ramifications of his act? Does he not notice that we are being laughed at again?
Much later: And here's what the splendidly acerbic and contrarian Robert Kirby has to say about the episode (posted very late on the M&G web site).
