Another asylum seeker story from the BBC - http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/world/asia-pacific/newsid_2069000/2069478.stm - a report on a breakout of 35 asylum seekers from the Woomera camp in South Australia, probably Afghanis. This story is not for the faint-hearted - a hunger strike is underway at the remote desert camp where people are refusing food and water, and 4 of the asylum seekers have stitched their mouths together in protest. So, in the name of freedom and democracy, we blow their world apart and, for those lucky enough to escape the hell hole that was home, we place them in such appaling conditions that they prefer to starve to death. I wrote about asylum seekers in Europe in Racial tensions flare in Europe earlier this week - next step is to look wider at the issues. More later.
Jobhunt progressing. Yesterday's interview promises work teaching English with emphasis on IT after the summer. All I have to do now is figure how to finance the intervening months - we're going down to the wire here. The very nice lady at the language centre also warned me that I can expect the entire area to shut from mid-July for a month. With the kids finishing school today for 2 months I'm wondering how on earth to occupy them - now I learn that nothing will be open - oh dear - maybe it's time to pack up the trailer tent and head south in search of sand and sea - we've got plenty of the sun element of these three great wonders of the world.
More scandals in Wall Street - now Xerox is admitting to false accounting. In the words of the Motley Fool we've got enronitis, worldcon and now copy cats. These were the people we were taught to look up to, to respect, to aspire to being. Aren't I glad I was a rebel, spending my money foolishly as I went and not saving for the rainy day. At least I'm not burdened by the debt of an endowment mortgage or disillusioned because my pension fund has dwindled to nothing. My kids may not inherit much but at least I won't be burdening them with debts brought about by dishonesty in corporate boardrooms. I'll just teach them to be meek and a tad cynical about guys in Porsches.
