Attacking Iraq: Myth and Reality. In the United States there is currently a debate over the methods and extent of military action to be taken against the Iraqi regime. This debate is constrained very narrowly, and all sides accept certain presuppositions which are not discussed. Both sides agree that Hussein is a dangerous menace developing weapons of mass destruction and the United States plans to restore democracy, or at least a more moderate leadership, in order to enhance stability and protect America and her allies from attack. The problem is that virtually every claim about Iraq made by the Bush administration and its compliant "opposition" is an outright lie. [kuro5hin.org] interesting, scary article. Some of the comments are brilliant. What I'd like to know is where does George W. find the time - he's battling on all sides - he's gonna fight Iraq, he's waging war on terrorism, waging war on personal freedoms, closing down the Internet . . . and he seems to be permanently on holidays - the man's a marvel. 10:24:29 AM |

SJ Mercury: Issues that will shape the Internet. Dan Gillmor. It took a series of smart decisions to create the Internet as an open network where innovation could thrive, as I noted in this space a week ago. Now let's look at some upcoming decisions that will shape communications for the next 50 years -- and ponder the consequences for openness and innovation if we make the wrong choices this time. [Tomalak's Realm] Dan Gillmor's searching article makes for depressing reading - as the US government hands ownership of the Internet over to the media moghuls whither the freedom and innovation of the medium? 10:08:53 AM |

PlayStation 2 gets TiVo-like functions. Look out, TiVo. An Austin, Texas-based company is offering software to connect the PS2 with a PC running video-recording software. [CNET News.com] I'm a bit confused by this article - is it happening or not? Hooray say I if it's for real. Since we installed PS2 in the living room I've been more or less evicted - every time I enter the room I am met by a sea of little boy faces engrossed in the box - and I don't get to watch any TV until about 10pm - result is I stay up too late and am tired every morning. At least if I can record the TV I'll be able to select from a wider range of programmes. 10:01:55 AM |
