Wardriving and Dumpster Diving in Salt Lake City
I found that there is a 2600 organization that meets regularly in Salt Lake and discusses hacking and other such stuff. One guy named Grifter gave a talk on his experiences and advice on "dumpster diving,"
"I have found private numbers for very important people on post-its. Building security alarm codes. And my personal favorite, payroll account login and passwords. It amazes me the things people write on these little brightly colored pieces of paper. They serve their purpose for a short time and are then balled up and thrown into the trash. How many people think to shred their Post-Its."
And if you're not concerned about your wireless network, think again,
We went outside around 8:00 and tried to pick up on some wireless networks. When we hit one we sat in front of the statue of Brigham Young near Temple Square and the wireless demo took on more of a real world aspect. You could see how the network showed up on Netstumbler, as well as watch the packets of information fly past. I felt like it was a good learning experience for all there, and more importantly, everyone was having a good time. After about an hour, and a little bit of "WarStrolling" Adept, Mutilator, and I did a little bit of Wardriving and then headed to the bar. People seemed to like the wireless stuff and I think it just helped confirm the fact that Wireless is the future of hacking.
These guys take what they're doing seriously. And if that's not enough, there's the Utah wardriving project. And if that's not enough, now people are out warflying. It won't be long before Phil Windley has Utah mapped out this way...
